How do I remove the old wig and replace it with the  new one?

A. Using a firm hand or a small pair of pliers, grip the cap of the
existing wig at the base of the neck. Gently roll upward toward the
crown or around the pliers. Once the cap starts to come away it should
be easy to continue by hand. Some people like to hasten the removal of a
wig by applying a warm, damp washcloth or hairdryer on a low setting
to soften the glue. If necessary, you can insert a metal spoon under the
warmed spot, working toward the crown. In this way, the original wig
is preserved and not stretched or pulled.

Some dolls have a ‘nest’ beneath the cap made from batting. This is not
glued in any way and is easily  inserted into the new wig.

Once you have removed the old wig, try the new one with and without
the nest to see which you prefer. Either way is right, it just depends on
the look you want. The best glue to use is Aileen’s All Purpose Tacky
Glue available from any HIGH STREET craft store. It gives you plenty
of time before drying and any excess wipes off easily with a damp cloth.

If you are left with a lot of the old, glue you can remove it before you
move on.. With many dolls there is no need , But if a rubbery glue has
been used and it seems exessive, it can be picked off with your nail or a
metal spoon if needed. Never use a sharp instrument or solvents.

If you are using the nest, insert it inside the wig cap first. Twist the
long part of the hair into a clip to avoid the glue. Then apply an even
line of glue around the inside of the cap along the hairline of the new
wig. If you are not using a nest, spread a thin  even coating of glue over
the dolls bald head. Stretch out the elasticated cap and lower it onto the
head.

If you need to make adjustments to the position you will have plenty of
time before the glue dries. A wig with a stretchy cap can be set on a
side part, for example (see bleow left) or you may need to adjust it
forward or backwards. Wipe off any excess glue with the damp
washcloth immediately and leave for at least 12 hours to dry.

After your new wig is on and the glue is dry, you may need to trim it so
that the bangs are the right length or the over-all length feels right to
you. Don't be intimidated - just cut a little at a time until you're happy
with the look. Sharp, small scissors work best, such as the haircutting
scissors you can buy from the drug store. Now you can curl or put up or
braid to your heart's content. Stand back and admire the new look!

Good luck, and happy wigging!
